Well this is quite a fascinating article! Can you imagine that poor woman crying at LaGuardia! And how about the fact that 90% of Parisian women in 1730s hired wet nurses - what the heck kind of stronghold must exist there! I love the way the new yorker is written. it makes some provocative claims at the end - which is better, 20 mins of pumping 3 times a day or getting home to the baby 1 hr sooner. Do you know there is a hands free pump now? I've heard a rumor that an acquaintance of ours drives to work while pumping! (I don't know why she doesn't just feed then drive to work, but it's crazy to imagine)

i know - fascinating indeed! i'm hungry for lots more breastfeeding history. with all the trials and tribulations that come with it, i've wondered how women in past centuries have coped. like what about the prairie days? anyway, as shocking as it is to think of all the women hiring wet nurses, i wonder if it wouldn't be just as common today if we didn't have pumps. i can imagine upscale moms hiring nannies "and if you breastfeed, that's a plus." for a nanny, it would be like putting on your resume that you speak a second language.
